Bob & Joan Inman
After Graduation I Attended Alverno College in Milwaukee from 1955-57 and obtained a BA in
nursing.

1958 I enlisted in the Army and was sent to Anniston, Ala for 3 months of basic training. I was
the assigned to Fort Hood Texas and worked in the Physical Therapy Clinic until 1960 when I
was sent to Stuttgart, Germany. (Bad Canstadt Army Hospital) Where I also worked in the
Physical Therapy Clinic 5 days a week.
On one of my weekends off I saw the Oberammergau Passion Play in Oberammergan, Germany
(a once in a decade event) that continued for two full days. I stayed with a German family and
during the breaks in the passion play I spent some time shopping. I was able to visit some of
the quaint stores that were run by participants in the play. It seems that the whole town is
involved in the production and acting of the play in one way or another. I visited the store run
by the man who played Christ. It was quite an awe inspiring event for me. I bought numerous
Hummel's (a German crafts figurine) for my family and myself. At that time the exchange rate
was 4 marks for the dollar. I was able to pay at the most 4 or 5 marks or a dollar and a quarter
for the Hummels I bought. Current values today might run to a hundred dollars or more per
Hummel.

I was able to go with a lady Sgt friend down the Rheine River on a one day trip . I saw many of
the old rock castles along the way and visited Heidelberg and Munich

Christmas 1960 was spent with a German family and we went to Midnight Mass. The next day
we had a goose dinner for the traditional Christmas meal. As a remembrance the couple gave
me a book on the history of Stuttgart.

Bob and I met in 1961 at the hospital in Bad Canstadt, Our first date was January 7. While dating
our activities included sightseeing and traveling in the Black Forest where we shopped and ate
at a restaurant where the children dressed in traditional folk attire, waited on us. My fiancee
(who spoke fluent German) was assigned to a veterinarian unit where he worked in German
Slaughter houses and Food Processing plants. Bob's ability to speak German was a great
asset during our travels.

We were married May 12, 1961 by the German Bergermeister (Mayor) and this ceremony was
followed by a service by the military chaplin

My son David was born on August 2, 1962 and by this time I had been discharged from the
Army. A German civilian who worked with Bob also owned a restaurant and offered to hold a
Baptismal Celebration for David. The Priest, The proxy couple, Bob's 1st Sgt, Bob, myself and 6
week old David had a wonderful banquet. I will never forget the great times and people I met in
Germany.

We left Germany May12, 1963 when Bob was transferred to Columbus, Ohio. Before assuming
duties in Ohio Bob first had to attend the advanced Veterinarian and Food Inspection School at
Fort Sam Houston, Texas for 12 weeks. While Bob was in school I spent an extended vacation
with my parents in New Berlin, WI. I had not seen them in four years so we had much to discuss.
My parents were typical grandparents meeting their son-in-law and grandchild for the first time,
they spoiled us rotten.

In late September after Bob had finished school, we were on our way to Columbus. For a year
we lived in what was called "the brick yard", the entire apartment complex consisted of red
brick. We lived there until a brand new duplex apartment became available. Our new landlord
was very nice and understanding, he had built and ran the complex, so he had a personal
investment in its success.

In 1965 my daughter Regina was born in a local civilian hospital. I had a very difficult delivery
and had to spend a few extra days under the care of a group of Nuns who took excellent care of
me.

Bob received orders reassigning him to Fort Sam Houston, Texas, We left Columbus in late
October with a stopover in New Berlin to visit my parents and have Regina baptized. When we
left Germany in 1963 we had purchased an bright red Volkswagen Hatchback, It cost us $1500. I
converted the back of the car into a nursery and off we went to Texas. It was November when
we actually started and my parents were worried because in New Berlin it had begun to snow
and the weather was nippy. But by the time we arrived in Texas we had peeled off all our winter
clothing.
We found a motel and Bob reported for duty the next day. We stayed at the motel for two weeks
before Bob was able to arrange for on post housing. After settling in, Bob at work and me
taking care of the house and children we looked forward to Thanksgiving. My mother and
Father came down to spend it with us. We all went to Fort Sam Houston for the "FEAST" and it
was a feast, they served: turkey, ham, Cornish game hens, potatoes, sweet potatoes, a variety
of vegetables, rolls, relishes and fruit. There was pumpkin pie, mincemeat pie, apple pie and
cookies.

In his spare time Bob started taking college courses at San Antonio College.

My second daughter Patricia was born at Fort Sam Houston in 1967.

In 1968 Bob received orders for Vietnam. He spent one year there a Chief clerk at the Medical
Depot in Cam Ranh Bay. Upon his return, Bob re-enrolled at San Antonio College taking general
education classes.

Bob retired from the army in 1971 and enrolled at Southwest State University with a major in
German and a minor in world history. He graduated in 1973. The three children and I cheered
when he received his BA. Bob then began his teaching career as a student teacher at Robert E
Lee High School.

I also began a teaching . In 1974 I obtained my first teaching position at Southwest High School
as a teacher's aide and in 1975 I began to teach at Robert E Lee High School.

In 1976 Bob received his Masters Degree in education and taught for 18 years at Robert E Lee
and I worked there as a teachers aide for 20 years.

Our three children graduated from Lee High School.

Bob retired in 1991 from Robert E Lee and I retired in 1993 from Robert E Lee.

Feeling that we were financially secure we wanted to relax and enjoy life, we sold our home in
2000 and moved into a retirement high rise apartment complex. (Wedgewood) 6701 Blanco Rd,
Apt 822, San Antonio, Texas 78216

To keep busy Bob teaches a defensive driving course for AARP and I usually go with him. We
go bowling twice a week and attend many classes given by "OASIS" A place to enrich the lives
of mature adults. I love to draw in pencil, paint and do crossword puzzles.
